Summer Movie Marathon 2025

The Department of Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of Culture and Theatro Ena announce the launch of the 2025 Summer Movie Marathon, which will take place, as every summer, at the historic Constantia Summer Cinema in Nicosia.

Under the starry sky of the capital and with the nostalgic atmosphere of summer cinema, the Summer Movie Marathon returns for its 26th year, being one of the most important cultural events in Cyprus, fostering film education and the cultural life of the country.

This year's premiere, on Wednesday 9 July at 21:00, will feature the Greek blockbuster Yparcho / Stelios, based on the life of Stelios Kazantzidis, written by Katerina Bey and directed by Giorgos Tseberopoulos.

This year's programme features award-winning films that have won awards at major festivals around the world, such as: MARIA directed by Pablo Larrain (Golden Lion nominee, Venice Film Festival, 2024, Best Cinematography Oscar nominee, 2025, Best Actress Golden Globe nominee, 2025), ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT directed by Payal Kapadia (Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival, 2024, Silver Hugo Award for Best Screenplay, Chicago Festival, 2024, RTVE Otra Mirada Award, San Sebastian Festival, 2024), ALL SHALL BE WELL written and directed by Ray Yeung (Teddy Award for Best Film, Berlin Film Festival, 2024, Audience Award, Frameline FF, 2024, Mermaid Award, Thessaloniki Festival, 2024), TATAMI directed by Guy Nattiv, Zar Amir Ebrahimi (Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, 2024, Brian Award, Venice Film Festival, 2023, Best Actress & Special Jury Award, Tokyo Film Festival, 2023, Young Filmmakers Award, Palm Springs Film Festival, 2025), MURINA directed by Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic (Golden Camera, Cannes Film Festival, 2021, Best Film Award, Hamptons Film Festival, 2021, Audience Award, Croatian Festival, 2021, Best Film Award, Sofia Film Festival, 2022), PLEIN SOLEIL / PURPLE NOON (tribute to Alain Delon who passed away last year) directed by Rene Clement (Best Foreign Language Film Edgar Allan Poe Award, 1962).

This year's programme includes two award-winning documentaries: HONEYLAND / MEDENA ZEMJA directed by Tamara Kotevska, Ljubomir Stefanov (Nominated for Academy Awards for Best Documentary & Best Foreign Language Film, 2020, World Cinema Documentary Award, Special Jury Award for Best Cinematography, Sundance Film Festival, 2019, Best International Film Award, DocAviv Film Festival, 2019), and NO OTHER LAND directed by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval, Abraham, Rachel Szor (Oscar Award for Best Feature Documentary, 2025, Audience Award & Best Documentary Award, Berlinale, 2024, Audience Award, IDFA, 2024, Best Documentary Award - European Film Awards 2024).

This year, there will be a special screening for the first time on 15 July, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities, of the Cypriot documentary SKAMMATA, directed by Danae Stylianou.

The programme also includes a screening, organised in partnership with the Queer Wave Film Festival, of the award-winning film CROSSING directed by Levan Akin (produced by Sweden, Denmark, France, Turkey, Georgia).

Like every year, the programme features celebrated Cypriot films, namely, EMBRYO LAVRA BUTTERFLY, written and directed by Kyros Papavassiliou, and AFRICA STAR written and directed by Adonis Floridis, as well as Greek productions, such as the film by Renos Charalambidis NYCHTERINOS EKPHONITIS.

And, of course, our little friends can enjoy under the stars the award-winning Norwegian production LARS IS LOL by Eirik Saeter Stordahl, which has touched thousands of viewers wherever it has been screened.
