Cyprus
The Department of Contemporary Culture funds international co-productions, high and low budget films, short films, documentaries, and animated films, as well as the commercial distribution of films and their participation at international festivals.
The Department of Contemporary Culture oversees and presides the Cinema Advisory Committee (SEKin). SEKin is the advisory body responsible for studying screenplays and proposals submitted within the framework of the Regulation on Funding Programmes for the Support of Film Productions. The recommendations of the Committee are ratified by the Deputy Minister of Culture.
Cinema Advisory Committee (SEKin)
The Cyprus Cinema Advisory Committee was established on March 9, 1994 upon a decision of the Council of Ministers (no. 40.698) with the following mission:
To study screenplays and proposals and to advise the Government on the financing of the production or co-production of films by the private sector in Cyprus, as well as by foreign producers. Also, to monitor the various stages of the production of these films and to advise on their final approval.
To study in depth the subject of Cypriot Cinema and make recommendations for the preparation of legislation governing the matters of filmmaking in Cyprus (production, promotion and distribution).
Composition of the Committee
The Cyprus Film Advisory Committee is composed of:
- A representative of the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture - Chairman
- Representative of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth
- Representative of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry and Tourism
- Representative of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation
- Representative of the Directors Guild of Cyprus
- Four independent members appointed by the Council of Ministers.
